This is all made from melamine covered particleboard. The top is about 3′ x 6′. The end “bays” are made from more of the melamine, just wide enough to hold the wire baskets you see. Each bay is topped with a slide out shelf (one is showing). This was lovely when I paper pieced – cut on one side, press on the other, sew in the center…I didn’t have to get up! Bad for my figure, good for work speed!
The shelf that holds my bernina is more of the melamine held between the 2 bays with metal angle brackets. So, this worked really well in my old studio because I had the floor space to devote to it. But, there are a couple of drawbacks:
1) the shelf wasn’t quite sturdy enough, it vibrated a bit when running at top speed.
2) Those wire baskets – they don’t hold fabric very well. If you fill a basket with quilting weight fabric, the basket flexes too much and falls off the tracks. We spent lots of $$$ on several of these and I ended up being very frustrated with them.
3) This piece was very heavy and not very portable…also, the edge banding ironed on all the cut edges wasn’t very sturdy and there was always a sharp corner to it.
