One of the auditions Liam had last Fall was for the Spotlight Awards, an all performint arts competition with dancers, singers, jazz and classical instrumentalists. Liam made the semi final rounds; another audition coming up! Part of the Spotlight mission is to provide the kids with coaching opportunities. The singers, dancers and jazz musicians had master classes, but since Liam is the only low brass classical musician in the semi finals, so the Spotlight folks set up a lesson for Liam with Terry Cravens, the bass trombonist for the LA Opera, he also teaches at USC.
The lesson was Saturday morning; this is something that usually I’d have Andrew and Liam do alone, but with my newly found “free time” and my intention to savor these moments, I went too!
Liam had a great 90 minutes, he went through all his audition music and got some nice insight from Mr. Cravens:
Afterwards, we wandered around the area surrounding the Music Center (which is where the Opera is based), it’s right next to Walt Disney Hall and the Colburn School, Liam’s auditioning there next Monday. We then had a great lunch at a fun Spanish tapas place before heading home.
I’m glad I had the time to go with them!
